Nautical Compass

In 1878 railroad baron Leland Stanford made a bet that all four legs of a horse were airborne while galloping. He hired Edward Muybridge to prove it by shooting a sequence using 12 cameras.

Wash your hands

Florence Nightingale was horrified about the cleanliness of hospitals during the Crimean War. In 1856, she drew a graph with nine month-long radial slices, each divided into the cause of death. The largest was not from the war, but from germs from doctors not washing their hands.

W.E.B. Circle 22

The scholar and Black rights activist W.E.B. DuBois presented a series of beautiful and insightful graphs for an exhibit at the 1900 Paris World Fair. This was decades before this type of artwork was popularized by Malevich and Kandinsky. This chart shows the distribution of Black landowners in 1875 Georgia.

W.E.B. Circle 11


The scholar and Black rights activist W.E.B. Du Bois presented a series of beautiful and insightful graphs for an exhibit at the 1900 Paris World’s Fair. This was decades before this type of artwork was popularized by Malevich and Kandinsky. This chart graphs the Black population in large cities to rural areas in 1890, as it moves toward the spiral.
